Called variously the “Gem of the Sun,” the “Evening Emerald” and “Pele’s Tears” (after the Hawaiian Goddess), the yellow-green Peridot was once believed to have the ability to chase away evil spirits and strengthen the power of medicine. Prized since 1500 BC, peridot is often “forged in fire” (formed in volcanic rock) and is sometimes a “falling star” (found in meteors). Arizona stones (known for their deep color saturation) harvested by members of the Apache Nation are found as much as 50 feet deep in lava flows.
